Running and Proper Shoes
runningRunning seems like such a great way to burn calories and stay fit. It is extremely convenient and it is fairly inexpensive, just put on a pair of shoes, walk out your door and you are on your way. However, this is where people can run (pardon the pun) into trouble. Shoes are the most important yet oft overlooked aspect of running. Improper shoes can lead to a whole list of injuries. Hip, back, knee, shin and of course, foot pain can often be traced back to improper running shoes.

When your foot strikes the ground it can do one of three things, roll too far inward (called over-pronation), roll too far outward (called under-pronation or supination), or maintain a slightly straight path. If your foot strike falls into the over-pronation or under pronation categories then you are at a greater risk for running injuries. The proper shoes can help correct these minor foot strike problems which can greatly reduce the risk of getting injured.

marathonIf you are really serious about running as your exercise of choice, or if you're currently experiencing pain, you should contact your local running shoe specialty shop. The big brand store that sell running shoes are not nearly (usually not even) educated enough to fit you properly. Running specialty stores that watch you run and analyze your gait (running stride) are your best bet. The running stores that I have frequented and send my runners are Snail's Pace (Pasadena), Phidippides (Encino), Runnergy (Encino), A Runner's Circle (Los Feliz), and Runner's Lane (Santa Clarita). These stores will properly fit you and get you running in the right pair of shoes regardless of price (remember the most expensive brand is not always the best brand!!!!!!!!!).

Hopefully with this advice you will be running happy and injury free for years to come.
Enjoy your miles
